Were you taught about Black Wall Street and the Tulsa Race Massacre in school?
I wish I could tell you that I grew up knowing about Black Wall Street, but I did not. In fact, I have friends who grew up right there in Tulsa, Oklahoma and were never taught what we will discuss here today.
But, let me tell you this...
I did grow up hearing comments like,
"Don't try to have too much, White people won't let you" from my grandmother and elders.
I wondered why.
My grandmother told me a story about how she'd won a new car in a raffle as a child and it was taken from her because she was Black.
Then, one day, she referenced "That time, White people burned an entire Black town to the ground" and I had to know more.
Because FEAR was loud, clear, and haunting.
